It's true. There are many brands and styles of tooth brushes. Many of which can be appropriate. The one dimension that we believe is important in all tooth brushes is soft bristles. It may feel like you are getting your teeth clean when you scrub with hard bristled tooth brush, but you are likely also damaging your gums. This can lead to gum recession and sensitivity and decay or tooth abrasion.
The ADA recommends that you change your tooth brush every 3 or 4 months, however any time the bristles become worn and frayed they become less effective.
We give our patients a new tooth brush at every cleaning :-).
